Windsor Police Officer Encourages Riverside Residents to Stand United Against Crime
Concerned residents of Riverside gathered at a recent community meeting to discuss growing safety concerns, with Windsor Police urging the public to stay vigilant, report suspicious activity, and work together to deter crime.
Sean Patterson of Windsor Police’s Community Police Services led the discussion, emphasizing the importance of quick and easy crime reporting.
“A lot of you have expressed concerns about trespassing—people going through your cars and yards,” he said adding, “We’ve made it easier on our website for you to fire off a quick info report.”
Patterson stressed that no detail is too small to report. “I don’t care how minuscule you think it is. That small detail could be the missing piece in a bigger investigation.”
He urged residents to file reports if they notice unusual footprints around their windows or signs of tampering on their property. “No one should be on your property unless you’ve invited them.”
The conversation also touched on the growing use of home surveillance.
“How many of you have cameras at your house?” Patterson asked, noting that technology has become much more affordable. “Eight years ago, a good security system would cost $8,000 to $9,000. Now, we have night vision, colour night vision—it may not always deter crime, but it will capture what happens so we can lay charges.”
He advised residents to keep their doors locked—homes, cars, and garages.
“Most break-ins happen between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. because people don’t react the same way to noises in daylight.”
Patterson also warned about the risks of posting vacation plans on social media or inviting strangers to your home for online marketplace transactions. Instead, he suggested meeting in a police-designated safe transaction location.”
The meeting shed light on the growing crime rate in Windsor, with police responding to a record number of calls. While home invasions are rare and usually targeted, break-ins and car thefts are rising. Groups of criminals will quickly sweep through neighbourhoods, checking unlocked doors and cars.
“We are seeing desperation,” Patterson explained. “People losing jobs, struggling with addiction—some just want to grab something quickly to get their fix.”
Patterson encouraged residents to join Neighborhood Watch groups, attend community meetings, and share concerns with elected officials and speak up.
“If we don’t report crimes, we don’t know there’s a problem. Without information, we can’t act.”
The meeting, organized by Tennille Moore, a local Riverside resident, was held at Pentecostals of Windsor. Another is scheduled for February 24 at 5:30 PM.
“The more we get together, the stronger we become,” Patterson concluded. “Doing nothing changes nothing. But by working together, we can take back our neighbourhoods.”
